(Styren, jin\u00fdmi slovy fenylethylen nebo vinylbenzen, je toxick\u00fd aromatick\u00fd uhlovod\u00edk &#8211; kapalina, kter\u00e1 se na vzduchu rozkl\u00e1d\u00e1 na formaldehyd a benzaldehyd). Polymerac\u00ed styrenu vznikaj\u00ed krystalov\u00e9 polystyreny, zp\u011b\u0148ovateln\u00e9 polystyreny (EPS), hou\u017eevnat\u00e9 polystyreny (PS), kopolymery, a vytla\u010dovan\u00e9 p\u011bnov\u00e9 polystyreny (XPS).  Polystyren ve stavebnictv\u00ed jako izola\u010dn\u00ed materi\u00e1l Ve sv\u011bt\u011b se vyrob\u00ed ro\u010dn\u011b p\u0159ibli\u017en\u011b 13 milion\u016f tun tuh\u00e9ho polystyrenu a 7 milion\u016f tun p\u011bnov\u00e9ho polystyrenu. Jedn\u00e1 se o \u010dtvrt\u00fd nejpou\u017e\u00edvan\u011bj\u0161\u00ed termoplast, a to t\u00e9m\u011b\u0159 ve v\u0161ech odv\u011btv\u00edch lidsk\u00e9 \u010dinnosti. Vyu\u017e\u00edvan\u011bj\u0161\u00edmi plasty jsou pouze polypropylen, polyethylen a polyvinylchlorid, zn\u00e1m\u00fd jako PVC. V\u00fdhodou polystyrenu, v jak\u00e9koli podob\u011b, je jeho pomal\u00e1 biodegradace. Tato vlastnost z n\u011bj \u010din\u00ed v\u00fdborn\u00e9ho pomocn\u00edka ve stavebnictv\u00ed, proto\u017ee odol\u00e1v\u00e1 p\u016fsoben\u00ed vn\u011bj\u0161\u00edch vliv\u016f pom\u011brn\u011b dlouhou dobu. Nev\u00fdhodou tohoto materi\u00e1lu je naopak jeho k\u0159ehkost, o \u010dem\u017e jsme se mnoz\u00ed p\u0159esv\u011bd\u010dili. A tak\u00e9 velmi mal\u00e1 tepeln\u00e1 odolnost.
